Christmas in Newcastle

This year Dan & i headed up to Newcastle to spend Christmas with Mum, and my brother David & his wife Anita. We flew up on Christmas Eve, and had a lovely dinner on Christmas Day, joined by Pat. On the Tuesday we had a chance to catch up with the extended family, it had been nearly 2 years since the last time, and it was good to meet the new addition to the family, young Joshua, properly as well!

Heading back down south on Wed was problematic though, the flight was cancelled due to fog and there was no alternative flight for 2 days. Dan & I were able to hire a car though, and drove home instead so we’re back in time for New Year.

New House Purchase

We spotted a house in Chandlers Ford, newly on the market, and so we arranged a viewing over the weekend. Unfortunately it was rather out of our price range, so we were going to leave it. However, a call from the estate agents said the seller would rather have a quick sale than reach the asking price – so we put in a low offer, and after minimal negotiation had it accepted! We’re happy as it’s 12% below the asking price, meaning it’s affordable, but gives us most of what we need.

Fingers crossed the survey goes well now, and doesn’t show any nasty surprises like last time!

House Buying fell through

Unfortunately the survey results on the Bishopstoke house were very poor, much worse than expected. Therefore Dan & I have pulled out of buying it and will put our energies back into wedding plans for the time being. Hopefully we’ll get a new opportunity to buy in the near future.

Family Holiday

This year Dad hired a cottage in Devon (near Barnstaple) for our family holiday. Unfortunately my brothers couldn’t make it this year, but Dan & I enjoyed the week with my Dad, step-mother Lin, step-brothers, step-sister-in-law and my nephews Archie & Oscar. We also enjoyed meeting the many cats in the area, a couple of which adopted us and joined us in the cottage most days.

During the week we made good use of the facilities on the complex with the cottage – the swimming pool, gym, tennis and badminton courts and the games room with table tennis & pool. Dan & I had a couple of trips away, into Barnstaple, down to the coast to play in the amusements, and we also went bowling. Generally it was a quiet week, with lots of good food, many bottles of wine and refreshing our memories of card games we haven’t played in years.

Oxford

Dan & I had a theatre voucher to use from last Christmas, so we booked in to see the matinee performance of HairSpray in Oxford. The show was brilliant, and we had a lovely day out, although parking was a little difficult. After the show we had tapas at La Tasca, making it a good end to the day out.

Buying a House

Dan & I weren’t planning to buy a house just yet, but last weekend we saw a lovely house in Bishopstoke (as we were bored) and were amazed to find out we could get a mortgage to cover the asking price! After a second viewing on Monday we put in an offer a little below the asking price and had it accepted!

We had a few issues around the mortgage when it turned out they hadn’t mentioned an important exclusion during the initial discussions, after a frantic couple of days making phone calls though we now have an application in and have the process started. Hopefully it will all go well.

Resolutions – Sept

Over the last few months I have suffered with a couple of problems in my leg, starting mid June and only just resolved now at the end of Sept. This has had meant very little exercise, though I have tried to keep walking at least. Weight loss has similarly been difficult and has fluctuated up and down without big changes either way.

* I’m still at the same weight I was at the end of May, so while not great at least I’ve maintained the loss so far.
* My professions case is still in progress, work has been very busy and I have had no time to do essential work, let alone find time for personal development unfortunately.
* Exercise was OK, maintaining an average of 3 sessions per week. This was all gentle exercise, such as walking, though.
* I have started putting my promotion case together, but this has also gone on hold for the same reasons my professions case has not progressed.

Specific targets for October are still to keep losing weight and maintain the exercise levels. Basically to get back on track for the overall yearly targets (1 stone weight loss).

Sam’s Hen Do

Sam’s getting married later this year, and for her Hen Do we all headed off to Brighton. We had a lovely dinner out on friday night, then on saturday we had a pampering session, where I had my first ever manicure, then enjoyed learning a bit of Burlesque Dancing in the afternoon. In the evening we got dressed up in our 80′s costumes, had fish & chips on the beach, and went out for cocktails. Sunday we had high tea before heading home again, many of us the worse for wear from a little too much to drink!

Engagement Party

As Dan & I are going to spend a couple of years saving up before we get married, we had an Engagement Party so we could celebrate with friends & family now. We hired out the IBM Hursley Clubhouse, with a lovely BBQ, a few games and enjoyed catching up with everyone who could make it. It was also a chance for mine & Dan’s families to meet up properly. Thankfully everyone seemed to get along well. There are photos in the gallery, taken by Dan’s Dad.

Plymouth

Dan had a networking event to attend in Plymouth, so I joined him and we had a lovely weekend away. The friday evening networking event was a good party and as we were in the area, we also spent a night on the edge of Dartmoor in a lovely little hotel. The food was fantastic, and it was certainly different where the car park was next to the paddock for ppl arriving by horse! Unfortunately the weather was too bad to really explore the area, but we hope to get back another time.
